It could be said that the first tourist in central Dalmatia in "the most beautiful town in the world", as the inhabitants of Split like to call their 1700 year old town, was the Roman Emperor Diocletian, when he chose this particular cove as the spot to build his palace for the enjoyment of his retirement, with the whole world under his feet. Today, Split is the cultural and economic centre of the region with about three hundred thousand inhabitants.
It is the largest town on the Croatian Adriatic coast and its largest maritime gate to the world. The heart of the town still lives in the rich history, made from ancient times to the present, which is why the historical core with Diocletian's Palace is included in the World Heritage List under UNESCO protection. This metropolis of the Croatian south, with numerous museums, galleries, cultural events, and vivacious youth, lives in the quick pace of the 21 st century and is a tourism destination that cannot be bypassed by those who happen to be in the wider surrounding area of this oldest, and yet eternally young town.
Should you wish to feel the rhythm of the night, the City of Split will offer you hospitality in its numerous taverns, restaurants, and terraces where the cult of enjoyment in the open air of the mild Mediterranean climate is nurtured all year round.
